In a 2014 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition by a team of researchers, it was shown that certain probiotics, namely the strain, lactobacillus rhamnosus, could help women lose weight AND keep it off. (9)

In the study, the participants followed a 12-week weight loss diet, followed by a 12 week period in which maintenance of body weight was observed. Half of the group also took the probiotic from the lactobacillus family while the other half didn’t.

What is extremely interesting is that after the 12 weeks, a significant amount of weight loss was seen in the women who had taken the probiotic, and then during the 12 week maintenance period, those same women continued to lose weight! At the end of the study, the women who had taken the probiotic lost twice as much weight over the 24-week period than those who didn’t!

In one randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, Bifidobacterium breve showed promising results for participants. At week 12 of the study, a significantly lowered fat mass was seen in the B. breve group compared to the placebo. In another peer-reviewed study on mice, the results showed that the use of B. breve could be effective in reducing the risk of obesity. 

Lactobacillus plantarum: This probiotic strain shows promising results for both weight loss and to help prevent obesity. Researchers who analyzed 82 probiotic studies concluded that specific strains of Lactobacillus plantarum (along with strains of Lactobacillus gasseri) used in food supplements showed an anti-obesity effect. Results of the analysis also showed that L. plantarum was associated with weight loss in animals.
